Hacked!

Yes, the Grotto was hacked. The full damage is minimal, and under control momentarily. A hacker named Cecen removed my ARCHIVES INDEX of all things and replaced it with the below:

For Islam
Hacked by Cecen

At least the damage is reversible (example page here), but I've asked my server admin to look into it. I just want to know...why? If you want to make a point, why hack? It's not like my writing was in any way offensive, and if it was some kind of prank - think again, it wasn't funny. I'm curious, and at the same time, on the warpath. Seems like freedom of the press doesn't circulate too well among some people.

Updates

Apparently this guy is a Turkish hacker, which answers merely one of my questions. Second, he's attacked quite a few sites, although they're extremely spread out. A lot of them were foreign, but I wonder — it has to be linked to the CMS people are using? What if the default username for Movable Type, Melody, still existed and through there, one would have access to administrator privileges on some setups? But if that were the case, why would my archives FOLDER be attacked and not the normal file? Lots of questions!

Jeeze lately It seems like I’ve seen alot of peoples sites being hacked. I dont understand what the point to hacking is if your not obtaining anything for your benefit. It seems like they just do it for the hell of it. Glad to hear that it wasent anything major tho. Goodluck figuring the whole thing out.

Hey :) Sorry for commenting without saying anything about your post! But I just wanted to say thanks for the helpful review. I thought it was going to be mean and I was quite scared waiting for the review, but it made me laugh (I’m not sure if that was your intention?). I’m glad you posted those links for tutorials! :) Thanks again! xx

Oh, no problem at all! I was actually planning to e-mail you personally and tell you I was doing it, since I’m still new to this. I really don’t like forcing people into a corner, so I’m glad you laughed - I tried to make it funny here and there, but overall I was worried about the way I was phrasing things.

Thanks :D

it’s a bummer that you site gets hacked. But yeah alot of turkish hackers are beginning to show up now. Im surprise they havn’t tried hitting big stuff yet. Don’t worry bis. People who do this hacking have nothing better to do and are scum.

I had been hacked around this time as well. Quite peculiar. Oh, and that hacker also happened to be muslim. Changed all the php files on the server with the message, so had to replace all the files. Thankfully though everything else was saved.
